More on Ohio State & Ford LSR Teaming

To all Buckeye Bullet fans,

This is the big secret that we have not been able to tell you until now.

For the past year, The Ohio State University Student Land Speed Racing Team has been working on two new land speed cars, Buckeye Bullet 2 and the Ford Fusion XV1. Last night in an exclusive posting on AutoBlogGreen.com , the Ford Motor Company published the first in what will be many stories about this unique teaming.

I will let Ford take the lead on telling the world about the Ford Fusion XV1. All I can add is that our students are deeply involved in the design and development of the Ford project, while at the same time designing and building Buckeye Bullet 2.

Why Ford and Ohio State are teaming:

  • BB2 & XV1 are other steps in the process of making HFC powered vehicles a reality
  • BB2 represents The Ohio State College of Engineering's unique educational programs designed to meet the needs of those industries, such as the automotive industry, which are experiencing business & technology paradigm shifts.
  • The Ohio State College of Engineering fills a need in automotive research to test HFC technology at the limits of its performance. Ford . . . other BB2 sponsors . . . everyone will benefit from the BB2 student research project.
  • The Ohio State Buckeye Bullet students have land speed racing experience and success
  • Ford is a world leader in HFC vehicle technology
  • Ford jump starts the competition to hire the best and brightest engineering graduates . . .anywhere!
Ohio State's motto is "Do Something Great!" This is how a dozen college students, out of over 50,000 fellow Ohio State students, are doing something really great to further research, improve our environment and society . . . to change the world.

Thank you for your support of The Ohio State University Buckeye Bullet 2 Student Land Speed Racing Team!

Go Bucks! Go even faster!!

Ford and Ohio State building Fusion & BB2 to capture fuel cell land speed record

To all Buckeye Bullet fans,

Ford Motor Company and The Ohio State University are teaming up to try and capture double land speed records for fuel cell powered vehicles. AutoblogGreen has the exclusive story on the Fusion XV1 and Buckeye Bullet 2!

ABG Exclusive: Ford and OSU team up for fuel cell land speed record

Posted May 23rd 2007 10:32PM by Sam Abuelsamid
Filed under: Motorsports, Green , Tech, Ford

Ford and Ohio State University are teaming up to attempt a double land speed record for fuel cell-powered vehicles. Ohio State already holds the land speed record for electrically driven vehicles at 315 mph with the battery-powered Buckeye Bullet. Now they are providing the motor and fuel cell that will power the Ford Fusion XV1 and the Buckeye Bullet 2 when they head out to Bonneville to try and set dual records for fuel cell powered vehicles in the unlimited and production classes. AutoblogGreen has the information and will be providing more coverage over the coming weeks and months.

Buckeye Bullet 2 Presentation at Los Alamos

Editor's note: Nigel McQuin is one of the world's foremost electrical power designers. Nigel is also the designer of the Buckeye Bullet custom electric motor, the heart of the world's fastest electric car and the world's first HFC streamliner. As he travels the world in his work, he also tells of the story of our Buckeye Bullet students. Here is Nigel's latest report.

Gentlemen,

During a visit to the Los Alamos National Laboratory, yesterday 05/14/2007, I was pleased to make a presentation on the electric car land-speed-record project to the staff of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and the Superconductivity Technology Center.

Some 30 people attended, with a large number of questions and comments. They were very impressed by the achievements of the team, and their ability to covet such results in such a disciplined time schedule. They wish us well with the BB II effort.

They are also looking to recruit some spirited electrical graduates/post-grad students for their efforts here, is anyone interested in moving to NM?

The Los Alamos National Laboratory generator is rated at 1400 MW, and provides pulsed power to the experiments in the National High-Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL).

In 1994 I qualified the short-circuit current carrying capabilities of the inter-tie transformers for this pulsed power supply, when I was still running the high-power electrical test laboratory in East Pittsburgh, PA. It was good to see the electrical equipment installed, and pleased to hear that it continues to provide a reliable power source after 13 years of continuous service.

I continue to be pleased to act as an ambassador for the project, and spreading the word to the technical community.

Regards,
Nigel P. McQuin

Bonneville's Best Hear Buckeye Bullet 2 Presentation

Their names represent the best and fastest Bonneville racing families and teams.  Tom Burkland, Rick Vesco, Terry Nish and many others were to hear and see a Buckeye Bullet 2 presentation given by BB2 fans and supporters & USFRA members, Kent & Brent Singleton, at last night's Utah Salt Flats Racing Association (USFRA) meeting in Salt Lake City.

The Buckeye Bullet students have been working closely with Tom Burkland and with Bonneville Nationals officials in California and Salt Lake City for more than a year on the design and safety features of Buckeye Bullet 2, the world's first hydrogen fuel cell powered land speed streamliner.  Tom is going after the all-time, wheel driven land speed record of 458 mph and has a top speed of over 430 mph on The Salt.

UTSFA will host a "Welcoming Celebration" for the BB2 student team in Salt Lake City on the Saturday immediately following Bonneville 2007 National Speed Week.

Thanks, Kent & Brent!!
